Communication
While we often assume we have no issues in communicating with others, we must always be aware that we are fallen creatures who will often fail to communicate our needs and desires effectively. Our communication is affected by both our fallen nature and our past experiences.
Issues with Communication
- Misunderstandings
- Lack of Intimacy
- Lack of Trust and Transparency
- Vindictiveness
- Apathy Toward the Relationship
Biblical Examples
James 1:19
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.
Colossians 4:6
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
Discussion Questions
What is the root of communication problems?
Gen 3:1-19
How can we identify our communication problems?
How does God encourage people to communicate?
Eph 4:29: Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Matt 12:33-37: “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Prov 18:21: Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
Eph 4:25: Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.
Moving Forward
Be Honest with Each Other
- Though it can be difficult to admit we have trouble communicating, relationships are often healthier when we are honest about our shortcomings and practice self-awareness.
- Set Aside Time for Prayer and Reflection
Make it a priority to bring your communication issues to God in prayer. Seek out Biblical wisdom and pray for each other.
Listen Carefully
James tells us to be “quick to hear” (James 1:19). That is, we should always be just as concerned with listening as we are with speaking.
Seek Out a Mediator to Help Talk Through Difficult Issues
It can often be helpful to have a mediator who can help bring a fresh perspective. Seek out a professional pastor, mentor, or counselor who can help you work through any communication barriers.
