Costly Discipleship: Part 2
WRITTEN BY DREW MATZ
“Rejoice in the Lord always, for he has secured your soul for himself...”
In our previous discussion, we talked about the challenges Christians face in a world that has changed dramatically over the past year. We discussed the bleak situation that faces the Church at large and as Christians individually.
So, to quote Francis Schaeffer, how shall we then live? How are we to Live Together despite circumstances that demand we stay apart?
Here are a few considerations as we wrestle with the challenges we currently face:
Rejoice in the Lord:
This one seems a bit odd, but we Christians are a people of hope. However, it is important here that we make a distinction between optimism and hope. While our current circumstances admittedly might not warrant much optimism, we ultimately place our trust and security in Christ, who has already overcome the world in all of its forms of trial and tribulation. Therefore, rejoice in the Lord always, for he has secured your soul for himself. Seek out other Christians in discipleship and make yourself known. To them. Go out into the world boldly, confident, and secure in the work Jesus has already done once and for all.
Delight in the Truth
The Bible talks about truth with a capital “T,” and there is something to be said about being able to take refuge in the truth in a world that has abandoned it. We can find solace in truth because it does not change. The Psalmist describes truth as subsisting in God’s word and enduring forever (Psalm 119:160). Jesus speaks of the truth as synonymous with God’s word, having the ability to fortify and sanctify (John 17:17). With God for us, who can be against us?! Go out in peace knowing God’s truth is with you.
Seek the Wisdom of God
These times are challenging. It is important to stand firm in our faith. However, the Bible also teaches that we should be cognizant of how we should live in a hostile world. He is adamant that we approach things with tact, making sure our actions are intentional and not seasoned with salt:
Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
-Matthew 10:16
Even when it seems hopeless, and when we want to react in anger, we have to remember our Lord’s words to be shrewd and wise. There is a time and place for everything. Wisdom is learning to discern how we react in any given situation to ensure we are being good ambassadors for Christ, especially in a world where we can be silenced with the click of a button.
Overcoming the World
Admittedly, these suggestions are only a few of many. The Church is in the midst of a battle that we are still feeling out, still plumbing the depths of God’s word to know how to best act as Christians in a world that has been turned upside down. As you continue to seek God’s face, take heart in the finished work of Christ and be at peace knowing all nations will be brought to his feet (Psalm 110:1).
